CHECKLISTS:  DEPARTURE CHECKLIST

for Vacationers or Part-Time Residents

___1. Have mail, newspapers, and any other deliveries stopped / held / forwarded as desired.
___2. Have any other services suspended / scheduled as desired.  e.g.: pool maintenance, landscaping, housekeeping, pet grooming, etc.
___3. Any scheduled events or appointments, services that need to be rescheduled or cancelled?  _______________________________
___4. Clean out refrigerator. If absence is going to be extended, consider completely cleaning out refrigerator and freezer, unplugging it and propping doors open. Regardless of how you handle this, it is a great idea to put a fresh opened box of baking soda in both refrigerator and freezer.
___5. Adjust / set heating / cooling systems as desired. Perhaps at 75°-85° in summer, and maybe 45°-55° in winter.
___6. Consider unplugging critical / expensive electrical appliances such as TVs, stereos, computers, etc. that could possibly be damaged by lightening strikes or other extreme power surges.
___7. Check all windows, doors, gates, etc.
___8. Drain and/or cover all sources of standing water, such as hoses, buckets, fountains, bird baths, etc.
___9. Cover / store / secure as desired any outdoor furniture or equipment.
___10. Eliminate conditions conducive to animal infestation such as piles of debris, lumber, or other opportunities for uninvited guests.
___11. Ensure that irrigation system is set the way it needs to be during your absence - more in the summer, less in the winter.
___12. Consider telling neighbors about your absence and leave an emergency contact name and number with them.
___13. Adjust window coverings as desired - typically, mostly closed.
___14. Set timers for lights if desired and let them operate for a day or two prior to your departure to ensure they operate as desired.
___15. Remove all garbage / recyclables from house.
___16. Clean Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning filter(s).
___17. Turn off or down the temperature control on the hot water heater. If gas is the source of heat, consider turning off the gas supply. Consider purging water out of bottom of hot water heater to remove any built-up scale and rust.
___18. Consider having exterminator services performed as a preventive measure before your departure.
___19. Consider replacing light bulbs in devices that you want to operate during your absence and adjust timers if necessary. Remember lamp posts, security lighting and interior lights on timers, etc.
___20. Ensure all gas appliances are turned off / disconnected as appropriate. Remember gas grills, gas lamps, stove, clothes dryer, hot water heater, etc.
___21. Consider unplugging or disabling the garage door opener.
___22. Clean out fireplaces, chimneys, chimeneas, grills, etc.
___23. Turn off electrical breakers to outdoor equipment such as spas.
___24. Consider draining and cleaning above ground spas.
___25. Place water softener in "vacation" mode or otherwise adjust as appropriate.
___26. Take in or otherwise cover / secure outdoor items that may be adversely affected by the elements: sun, wind, rain.
___27. List other personal things you must do before leaving town.
